Program Expectations
Program Expectations
The Ontario Nurse Practitioner Education Consortium (ONPEC) offers a demanding, Master’s level nurse practitioner education program designed to prepare graduates to meet the entry level competencies for NP practice in Ontario. Prospective and current learners should be aware of the following expectations:
- Independent and practice based learning
The ONPEC program is built on a philosophy of practice based and self directed learning rather than a traditional didactic approach. Learners are expected to take an active role in their education through independent and peer supported learning. This includes completing online learning modules and case studies, reviewing and interpreting a significant amount of online resources and required readings, developing and monitoring individual clinical learning plans, and preparing for and participating in seminars, labs, and other learning activities with peers and instructors. - Clinical placement requirements
Learners complete more than 700 hours of clinical placements as they progress through the five clinical courses in the program. Each ONPEC university has a defined catchment area, and placement coordinators at each university organize clinical placements within their university’s designated region. Applicants should therefore consider their ability to complete placements and other in person program requirements within the region associated with their chosen university. Additional in person requirements, including seminars and labs, may vary by university. Learners should consult their university for specific requirements. - Time commitment
The ONPEC program requires a significant commitment of time to coursework, independent study, clinical placements, and other learning activities. Learners should not expect to maintain full time employment while meeting all program requirements. Prospective learners are encouraged to consider financial and personal planning options that will allow them to dedicate sufficient time to the program. These may include scholarships, bursaries, loans, savings, lines of credit, or other available sources of financial support.
