Therapeutics in Primary Health Care 1
The Therapeutics courses are designed to help students develop the knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical skills required to provide safe and effective pharmacological and non-pharmacological care for clients across the lifespan.
Students learn to develop therapeutic care plans by integrating assessment findings, diagnostic reasoning, evidence informed practice, and client centered care approaches for both acute and chronic health conditions.
Course Focus

• Pharmacotherapeutic management
• Non-pharmacological interventions
• Advanced client education
• Therapeutic care planning
• Prescribing practices and prescription writing
• Clinical pharmacology concepts
• Referral and consultation processes
• Evaluation of therapeutic outcomes
Learning Experience
Through weekly seminars, online discussions, case based learning, and collaborative activities, students apply therapeutic principles to common episodic and chronic primary health care conditions.
The courses emphasize critical thinking, evidence informed decision making, and safe prescribing practices within the scope of the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner role.
Professional Practice and Prescribing
Students examine the professional, ethical, and legislative responsibilities related to prescribing authority and therapeutic management within Ontario primary health care practice.
Throughout the courses, students develop proficiency in:
• Writing complete prescriptions
• Evaluating medication effectiveness and safety
• Identifying adverse drug effects and interactions
• Educating clients about therapeutic options
• Determining when referrals and consultations are required
The overall goal is to prepare students to provide safe, effective, and evidence informed therapeutic management for diverse client populations across the lifespan.
