Integrative Practicum

The Integrative Practicum is the final course in the Ontario Nurse Practitioner Education Consortium (ONPEC) program and is completed following the successful completion of all Nurse Practitioner and graduate level coursework.

This course focuses on integrating and synthesizing the advanced knowledge, clinical skills, and professional judgement developed throughout the program in preparation for entry into Nurse Practitioner practice.

Main Focus

Students synthesize competencies essential to advanced nursing practice while providing primary health care to clients across the lifespan.

The course emphasizes:

• Professional autonomy and accountability
• Integration of theory into practice

• Leadership within primary health care settings

Students critically examine organizational and system level factors that influence scope of practice, professional responsibility, and health outcomes.

The Integrative Practicum combines:

• Extensive clinical placement experiences
• Small group seminars
• Online learning modules
• Case based discussions
• Reflective practice activities
• Collaborative learning opportunities

Seminars are designed to support the integration of theory and clinical practice through discussion, problem solving, and analysis of real clinical experiences encountered during placements.

Clinical Practicum

Students participate in supervised clinical placement experiences across a variety of primary health care settings, allowing them to further develop confidence, autonomy, and clinical reasoning as advanced practice nurses.

The practicum experience encourages students to:

• Consolidate advanced practice competencies
• Refine diagnostic and therapeutic reasoning
• Strengthen communication and collaboration skills
• Apply evidence informed approaches to client care
• Develop professional confidence within the NP role

Professional Growth

The Integrative Practicum provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their evolving practice, identify learning goals, and maximize clinical learning opportunities in collaboration with tutors, faculty, and clinical preceptors.

The overall goal is to prepare students for safe, competent, and effective practice as beginning Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioners.
